Ledigos hosts tree planting to celebrate International Day of Forests with the Palencia Model Forest

On April 9, 2025, the municipality of Ledigos in Palencia, Spain, celebrated the International Day of Forests with a symbolic tree planting event organized by the Palencia Model Forest. Originally scheduled for March but postponed due to heavy rains, the event featured the planting of 91 trees, each representing one of the 91 municipalities that comprise the Palencia Model Forest territory.

The day's activities began with an informative session titled "Integral Management of Poplar Plantations", held at the Ledigos Teleclub. Conducted by representatives from the Federation of Forestry Associations of Castilla y León (FAFCYLE) and PEFC Spain, the session targeted local authorities and private landowners. It emphasized the benefits of proper planning, forest certification, and administrative management of poplar plantations, a significant forest resource in the region.

Following the session, participants proceeded to a nearby plot for the ceremonial planting of the 91 trees. This initiative, intended to become an annual tradition rotating among different municipalities, aims to highlight the forest's value as a shared space and a driver of rural development.

The event is part of the broader Palencia Model Forest Project, supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union's NextGenerationEU funds.

The Palencia Model Forest candidate encompasses over 400,000 hectares between the Montaña Palentina Natural Park and the Camino de Santiago, covering approximately 42% of the province's area. The project seeks to revitalize the region's forest bioeconomy through sustainable management practices, community engagement, and the promotion of local resources.
