Secretariat in Spain and Morocco to assess the progress of the two territories on the way to become official Model Forests

A few weeks ago, the Mediterranean Model Forest Network (MMFN) Secretariat, together with Patrick Wylie representing the International Model Forest Network (IMFN), visited two territories within our Regional Network currently on their way to being officially recognized as Model Forests: the Palencia Model Forest, already a candidate, and the Atlas-Midelt Initiative.

The MMFN delegation was composed of Toni Ventre, General Secretary, and Elisabetta Gravano, Vice Secretary, both from the Tuscany Region, which has managed the Mediterranean Network since 2019.

The agenda began in Spain, with a full program of meetings and field visits with the Palencia Model Forest association and its stakeholders. The delegation visited their headquarters and several local initiatives. The territory of Palencia, a long-standing candidate to become a Model Forest, has worked intensively to build a strong and diverse partnership including actors from all key economic sectors—agriculture, forestry, tourism, associations, and private enterprises. Supported by a recent project, the Palencia Model Forest is now reactivating economic and social revitalization initiatives based on the sustainable use and optimization of forest resources within its area.

The visit then continued to Morocco, where the Atlas-Midelt Initiative is finalizing its strategic plan to prepare for official recognition within the MMFN. Together with the members of the local board, Toni Ventre, Elisabetta Gravano, and Patrick Wylie met with local stakeholders to discuss the best ways to integrate the new Model Forest into the socio-economic context of the region, ensuring strong community engagement and active participation in the opportunities provided by the Network.

The overall outcome of the visits was very positive, as we were able to appreciate the great work done in both territories. Now the Secretariat teams will examine the final details with the aim of formalizing the recognition of the Palencia Model Forest and the Atlas-Midelt Model Forest as official members of the Model Forest Network.
