Portugal join the MMFN with a new Initiative led by The Federação Nacional dos Baldios (BALADI) |
|
At the end of July 2025, a collaboration protocol was signed by the MMFN Secretary to establish a new Model Forest Initiative in Portugal, led by The Federação Nacional dos Baldios (BALADI), in partnership with the "Prof. Baeta Neves" Center for Applied Ecology (CEABN), of School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, as a technical and scientific partner.
The principles underlying the MMFN including integrated landscape approaches, inclusive governance and the knowledge sharing- are fully aligned with BALADI's mission and practice.
By joining the Network, this new Portuguese initiative will strengthen synergies, foster the exchange of good practices, and open new opportunities for international cooperation on sustainable solutions tailored to the Mediterranean context. |

Discover more about the Kroumirie-Mogods Model Forest Initiative in Tunisia |
|
In March 2025, a protocol was signed to launch a new Model Forest Initiative in the Tunisian region of Kroumirie-Mogods. After several months of groundwork and its official presentation during the last Global Forum in Ottawa, we are now ready to share more details about this promising initiative, supported by the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries and the National Research Institute for Rural Engineering, Water, and Forests (INRGREF).
How extensive will this new Model Forest be? What types of landscapes will it encompass? And what are the main objectives guiding the drafting of its strategic plan? These are some of the key questions we will address as we introduce this new experience, which is set to play an important role in advancing sustainable forest management, community engagement, and resilience in Tunisia’s forest regions. |

| Native Trees of the Mediterranean Region: Distribution, Diversity and Conservation Challenges | | An international team led by INRAE and EFI, has created the most comprehensive open-access inventory of Mediterranean tree diversity. Published on August 2025, it catalogues 496 species and 147 subspecies across 39 regions, revealing striking differences in endemism -Türkiye alone hosts 277 endemic species. The study also exposes major gaps: nearly half of species lack IUCN extinction-risk assessments, and genetic data exist for only a third. Freely available, this resource supports sustainable forest management.
